A university campus is a microcosm of society; providing food, housing, stores, and services for a large community. These actions contribute to undermining the integrity and stability of ecological and social systems, at the local and global level.
ECOS focuses on the all-encompassing nature of sustainability, which includes the physical environment, economics and social issues, and treats them as being interdependent. We consider all aspects of the University of Alberta operations and policies, and the impact on the natural and social environment. As leaders in innovation, teaching, research, and information distribution, universities have a social responsibility to be role models for our society.
