How to create a new resource

To recommend a resource, the first thing you have to do is create a new page. The name of your page is determined by its URL or web address; notice that this page's URL is http://energyclub.wikidot.com/resources. The URL for a resource must be of the form http://energyclub.wikidot.com/resource:end-of-suburbia — just replace "end-of-suburbia" with the name of the resource you wish to create. If you leave out the "resource" part, your page will not appear in any of the lists below.

This procedure might look complicated if you haven't used a wiki before; but don't worry, it's fairly intuitive once you get the hang of it. Also, if you make a mistake, you can delete your new page by clicking the "options" button then "delete", then start over.

Here are the steps you need to perform:

1. Enter the name of your page in your browser's address bar and press Enter.
2. You should get a message telling you that the page does not yet exist.
   • If so, click the "create page" link.
   • Otherwise, the page already exists. Please choose another name for your page.
3. When you click "create page" the code for your new page will appear. This is a template based on "The End of Suburbia"; you need to substitute in the relevant pieces of information that describe your resource.
   • Please pay attention to the HINTs, which are there to guide you.
4. When you are done editing, click the "save" button at the bottom of the page.
5. Finally, click the "tags" button at the bottom of the page and enter either video, audio, book, or web depending on the type of resource you created. If you skip this step, your resource will not show up in the list.
   • Note: You can add additional tags that describe the subject of your resource, such as "nuclear" or "peak-oil".

Rating and tagging resources

Every resource page has a comment box and its own discussion forum thread, which can be found near the bottom of the page. In addition, members can "rate" a resource (including resources they did not create themselves) by clicking the "rating" button at the bottom of its page. The rating can be +1 or -1, depending on whether you liked or disliked the book/movie. Of course, it is most helpful to other members if you provide a rating as well as a comment that justifies your rating.

Another way to enhance resources is to add descriptive "tags". This can be done by pressing — you guessed it — the "tags" button at the bottom of a page. A video, audio, book, or web is required in order for a resource to appear on this page in the appropriate list. However, additional tags can help members find resources that relate to a specific topic, have a particular author, etc. The tags can be anything you like, but should be somehow relevant to the given resource. Also, note that multi-word tags should be hyphenated (e.g., "fossil-fuels").
